Coaches 1960s
By the end of 1961, the Southdown coach fleet was probably at its largest ever, mainly Leyland made up of almost 100 Royal Tigers, 155 Tiger Cubs, and 45 Leopards, plus 70 Commers, 25 Beadle-bodied integrals, and 45 Avengers. In addition a number of Beadle-Leyland rebuilds were still operating. This brought the total to just over 400, possibly the largest coach fleet in Great Britain. Unfortunately, the growth in ownership of private cars meant that by the late-60s demand for coach travel began to shrink, meaning that coaches were withdrawn and sold without being replaced. If you look at the 1191-1224 batch for example, you will see that some of them only spent as little as 7 years with Southdown compared to 14-15 years for some Royal Tigers. All of the coaches from 1962 until the last Southdown coaches in 1986 were Leyland Leopards except for 10 more Tiger Cubs similar to the 1961 batch.30 Fords, a small number of Leyland Tigers when this replaced the Leopard, and 1 odd Duple 425.
Note: Due to space limitations on this page, photos of Southdown Coaches are in My Photo Album found on the home page on the left-hand side.
1145-54
Similar to the 1961 batch, these Weymann-bodied Tiger Cubs were the last 30ft long coaches for Southdown and the last Tiger Cub coaches for the company. When new the 37 seaters were used on Beacon Tours.

The first 36ft long coaches for Southdown were a batch of 5. They all spent their whole working lives at Portsmouth depot, 1155/6 normally on the London-Portsmouth Express service, and 1157-9 working for the Triumph subsidiary, normally on Forces leave services at weekends.

1160-74
The second batch of 'long' Leopards were again bodied by Weymann ,to their 'Castilian' style. This was developed from the Fanfare body, and had longer side windows and forced air ventilation. The 45 seaters were nominally for excursion work, and the 49 seaters for Express services. 1173/4 allocated to Portsmouth could always be found on the London-Portsmouth Express service. They also introduced a new type of seating with backrests which finished at shoulder height, i.e. with no separate headrests. The logic apparently was that the company felt that as most Southdown express services were of about 2-3 hours duration, headrests were not necessary, and forward vision was also improved. These ‘low-backed’ seats were fitted to all new standard coaches up to and including 1249. Unfortunately, the public did not agree with the company about these seats, and after 1249 conventional seats were fitted, and at least some of the low-backed seats were replaced by standard seats.

This was the Grenadier, which had longer side windows, and a deeper front windscreen, with a more pronounced 'peak'. They did however have Cavalier dash panels (the assembly below the windscreen), presumably for commonality of parts.

What turned out to be the last Harrington bodies for Southdown were a batch of 10 PSU3 Leopards. They were the first 41 seat coaches for Beacon tours.

1183 was sold by Cowley in 7/76 to George Wimpey Ltd., London (contractor) for non-PSV staff transport. In 4/81 it passed to David Keith Wood T/A W. Wood, Pollington, North Humberside. Wood removed and scrapped the original Plaxton body (number 652598), had the chassis given a new Plaxton C53F body (number 8011LC003/S) and reregistered the completed coach FBT 68W. The coach was withdrawn in 7/93 but reinstated by 12/97. It was still in service in 12/00 but withdrawn by 3/03. In 12/08 Wood was considering replacing the original engine with a Leyland TL11H engine removed from a Leyland
National 2, but I do not know the outcome of those deliberations or whether the coach still exists.

Harrington also ceased coachbuilding in 1966, so Southdown chose Duple who had a stylish body called the Commander II available as replacements for the Weymann Tiger Cubs on Beacon Tours.
Although the next fleet number available for tour cars was 1764, the batch started at 1774, because HCD 374E was the nearest available registration matching the 1700 series.
